About the artist

After four years of study in photography and fine art in South Africa, and assisting renowned car photographer Des Kleineibst in Cape Town, Robert Greshoff left Africa in 1986 to settle in London, determined not to be a car photographer.

He was assistant to architectural photographer Michael Miller before setting up as an editorial photographer in 1988 – just in time for the recession that was on its way! Weathering that, he emerged as a dual specialist in photographing people and environments, and with an expanding client list.

Robert now photographs people and architecture for a broad range of clients from the architectural, editorial, construction, design, financial and PR spectrum. More recently he has developed new areas of interest, particularly the production of short films for the architectural sector. He also pursues personal projects as and when he can.

The 'Periphery Series' shown here was first exhibited in Canterbury in 2009:

“Given that I spend my professional life photographing environments which are necessarily intensely managed, this project is an exploration of the world where architects and planners lose interest and influence and where things kind of just are. The visual approach is intended to reflect this and the images are consciously created without using the organisational tools and conventions I would use for my professional work.

This particular collection forms the first part of an ongoing project and was produced using a 6x12 view camera on black and white stock and printed conventionally.

I have concentrated on coastal regions because this is an area that geographically reflects the aims of the project.”
